How to avoid the cowboys!
Get at least three estimates from different Roofers, which are in writing and comprehensive, be sure to discuss your specific requirements. Roofing work can be expensive, but again a good roofing company will draw-up a schedule of work to suit your needs.
Find out if your roofing company works on a ‘labour only’ basis, i.e., you supply the materials. This is perfectly legitimate, but means you will most likely receive two quotes, one for materials, the other for labour.
Always check their insurance. This should be full public liability insurance.
Make sure there’s a time scale for the work required, including a completion date. But also be aware that outside factors, like weather can affect that.
A cheap quote might seem attractive, but you could be buying yourself trouble!
The BIG No No!
They knock on your door and are polite & helpful saying that they are "working in your area and noticed that your roof needs urgent repair ". they say that they have got some tiles, or other materials left over from a previous job. They say that the work is very urgent and that they can do it straight away. The price seems very high, but you are shocked and worried to hear the news about the state of your roof – so you agree – after all they did say, “You can trust us”. You pay up, no receipt is given, and all they say is we'll return tomorrow. However in alot of cases tomorrow never comes!
